Introductory Track Classes

Intro to Track Cycling

The Introduction to Track Cycling Class is designed for riders 17 years of age and above with little or no bike racing experience as well as experienced road riders new to track riding.  Each Session is made up of a series of four classes. All classes should be completed in consecutive order.

Class Features

  • Structured, progressive, hands-on experience in the skills and strategies required for track riding.
  • Experience the fun and exhilaration of track cycling in a controlled atmosphere.
  • Primary focus on learning the basic skills and proper techniques to ensure safe and efficient riding on the track.
  • Participants instructed in position, drafting, acceleration, pedaling technique, steering vs turning, as well as proper track etiquette necessary for group riding and racing on the velodrome (as well as safety).
  • Students exposed to the different types of races specific to the velodrome.

Session I - 

  • Tuesdays, 6:30 pm:- 8:30 pm May 2, 9, 16, 23

Session II - 

  • Wednesdays, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm: May 3, 10, 17, 24   

Session III - Session is Full

  • Tuesdays, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm: June 6, 13, 20, 27

Session IV - Session is Full

  • Tuesdays, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm: July 11, 25,  August 1, 8

Session V- Session is Full

  • Tuesdays, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm: August 15, 22, 29 Sept. 5

Intro to Track for Triathletes

New for 2017! Several of our Introductory Track Class participants have expressed the value of the skills and conditioning to them as triathletes. With this in mind, we will be offering this special class dedicated to triathletes.

Group riding techniques are the focus in this class. These skills are beneficial to anyone who is training to be a better cyclist. Cadence, power development, starting techniques and positioning on the bike are all transferable to the efforts made in triathlons. This class will run on four consecutive Friday evenings at the track starting at 6:30 p.m. and running until approximately 8:30 p.m. Cost is $100 and includes the use of a rental track bike. Participants are encouraged to bring their own pedal and shoe systems. If you have difficulty removing your pedals, bring the entire bike and we can do it for you. Helmets are required.

2017 Women/Trans/Femme Intro Track Class

This course is designed for first time Women/Trans/Femme athletes to try out track racing. Bikes and helmets provided.

Session I:  Class is full

  • Sundays, 1:30 - 3:30 pm: May 7, 14, 21, 28

2017 USAC Licensed Accelerated Introductory Track Classes

For licensed riders with racing experience 

Participants will learn all the basic and necessary skills to be certified to ride and race at the track - all the elements of the standard four-day track classes, compressed into two three-hour sessions.

Licensed Rider Session I

  • Sundays, 4:00 - 7:00 pm: May 14, 21


$100 (this includes bike rental if needed)


A fixed gear track bicycle and ANSI approved bike helmet are required. Track bikes can be provided by the NSC if necessary. Participant's height and or frame size should be provided on the registration form.  Cycling shoes, pedals, shorts are not required, but recommended.  Participants should bring their own cycling shoes and pedal system to install on the NSC’s rental track bikes.

Additional Riding

Upon completion of the above classes, the rider should be capable of using the track for racing and/or training.  For racing, a license will need to be purchased from USA Cycling.  A one-day license can be purchased on race nights for $10 in addition to the race entry fee.
