Alec Guggemos (St. Paul Bicycle Racing Club) leaves Saturday for the 2016 Six Day London.  The St. Paul racer will compete in the Talent Cup event for U21 racers October 25-27.  His partner, Nikos Hessert of Evanston, IL, has raced in the Junior World Championships and is a member of the US National Development Team.  Together, they’ll form Team #8.

The Talent Cup will feature 15 teams from around the world, including UK, Dutch, German and Austrian teams.  Each evening, the Talent Cup teams will race a 40k (160-lap) Madison prior to the start of the first elite Madison.

This trip marks Guggemos’s first visit to Europe and the biggest racing opportunity of his career.  The 19-year-old noted, “I’m not entirely sure what to expect from the competition, but I know it will be fast!”  Earlier this fall, Guggemos raced in the Milton International Challenge in Milton, ON – his first UCI event.  “It was my first time racing indoors and the lack of wind made the racing really fast.  I know what it’s like to go deep into the hurt locker, now.  It was good preparation for the Talent Cup.”

Guggemos will be the designated sprinter of the pair with Hessert taking the long pulls.  “Nikos is a great pursuiter.  He’ll be our designated endurance man.  We haven’t had a chance to train together, but we are both arriving two days early and plan to work on our exchanges and develop our strategy,” said Guggemos. “We’re hoping we can mark the right moves and maybe take a lap or two toward the end of the first race when the other teams are tired.”

The event will be carried live on Eurosport, with the Talent Cup races starting at 6 PM London time.
